Founded in 1850, San Domenico is California’s first Independent school. It has a 171-year legacy as an internationally recognized K-12 day and boarding school, enrolling students of all backgrounds and faith traditions.
San Domenico prides itself on its rigorous college-preparatory curriculum. Its unique focus on both academic excellence and character driven purpose creates more than just great students – it develops great people.
San Domenico school is ranked in the top 4% of all independent schools across the U.S. and in the top 10 of boarding high schools in California. Furthermore, San Domenico also offers one of the top 5% of STEM programs in America. 91% of our students were accepted by one or more of their top 5 schools of interest and includes such schools as Cornell, Duke, Julliard, NYU, Northwestern, Reed, UC Berkeley, UCLA, University of Chicago, and USC.
Around 680 students attend San Domenico spread across grades K-12. The school offers a boarding program to its upper class students from grades 9-12. San Domenico serves a truly global student community, and out of the school’s 130 boarding students, 83 are international students from 22 countries across the world.

ACADEMICS
At San Domenico, students are immersed in a rigorous and relevant academic program that promotes and instills an authentic love of learning. San Domenico provides a vibrant learning environment that fosters each student’s personal and intellectual growth. This environment is enabled by small average class sizes of 14-16 students and a student-teacher ratio of 10:1.

San Domenico prides itself on its Honors and Advanced Placement courses, which prepare students to succeed in college by having the skills, the ability, and the courage to embrace challenge. On average, 2/3 of the school’s students earn a 4 or 5 on AP exams, with the most common score being a 5, the highest possible score. Choose between 27 courses across the different disciplines!
UNIQUE PROGRAMS
Aside from its core, Honors, and AP offerings, San Domenico has several other course distinctions. LEAF (Leadership Environmental Advocacy Focus) courses provide students with a coherent understanding of the interconnectedness of economic, social, and environmental issues and directly address these issues through the lenses of social justice and sustainability.
The ROSE Program (Real Opportunities for Service Education) is a two-year service learning project with students dedicating their time to an issue with reciprocal benefits for both the community and the student.
Finally, the internationally acclaimed Virtuoso Program is designed for upper school students who are exploring their potential as string musicians and wish to dedicate themselves to a rigorous academic and musical curriculum.

From sporting games to music to hiking or theatrical productions, there is always something for fun and relaxation available on San Domenico’s 515-acre campus. Outside of campus, enjoy planned trips where you white water raft down the American River, head south to kayak the Santa Cruz Bay, or swing on ropes through the Redwoods of Occidental. Teachers may also arrange summer trips, for example to Yellowstone for a biology research project, to Yosemite for a pilgrimage, or to Washington D.C. for some legislative learning in the nation’s capital.
